Manny Pacquiao gets the chance to ruffle Floyd Mayweather's feathers

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao gets the chance to ruffle Floyd Mayweather's feathers on Friday (Saturday in Manila) in Las Vegas when he takes his deposition in connection with the defamation case he filed against the outspoken American boxer. A deposition is a sworn testimony that is taken before a trial and Pacquiao will be joined by his American lawyers during the legal proceeding, according to the Filipino fighter's legal adviser Franklin Gacal. The case was filed last year, owing to Mayweather's statements charging that Pacquiao had used performance-enhancing drugs whenever he trained for a fight. Also part of the lawsuit were Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) president and owner Oscar De La Hoya and GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and the case was dropped against them after a public apology was issued. Lending a hand to Pacquiao's case against Mayweather are lawyers David Marosso and Daniel Petrocelli. "The case against Mayweather is very strong," Petrocelli told the Bulletin. There is bad blood between Pacquiao and Mayweather and their animosity towards each other reached fever-pitch a couple of weeks ago when efforts to stage a fight between them fell apart for the third time, owing to a disagreement on revenue-sharing. Mayweather has signed to face Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while Pacquiao has agreed to fight Tim Bradley on June 9 also at the MGM Grand. It is uncertain whether another round of talks would be done assuming they win their coming fights. Pacquiao, 33, leaves for the US Thursday night and is expected to fly back to Manila immediately after the deposition. Meanwhile, Filipino boxing idol and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny"' Pacquiao celebrated Valentine's Day with wife Jinkee and family members by holding a Bible study session at his exclusive resort in Barangay Tuka, Sarangani Province. Pacquiao spent a two-day vacation in his newly developed white beach resort in Barangay Tuka in Kiamba town where he was joined by relatives, friends, and some movie personalities, including Dennis Padilla, Long Mejia, Paulo Contes, Benjie Paras, Onyok Velasco and Blakdyak. Pastors Sam Martinez and Boy Buan presided over the Bible study and sharing activities for two days where Pacquiao and Jinkee even led the singing of Christian gospel songs. The Filipino boxing idol has been undergoing reformation for the past months and become active in holding Bible study sessions. As a gesture that he is deemed serious in his reformation process, Pacquiao even sold his shares in casino and nightclub businesses in Manila and disposed of all his fighting cocks on his breeding farm in Malungon, Sarangani Province, "I'm satisfied and happy now with my new lifestyle where I can spend enough time for my family without my usual activities hanging out with friends in bars and casinos," Pacquaio said. Manny gave Jinkee roses last Tuesday,Valentines Day, shortly before the Bible study began, which delved on the biblical verses of God's love to humanity. After the Bible study, Pacquiao sponsored parlor games participated in by his family members, employees, and guests, including local officials and media with total prizes of more than P1 million. Senate seeks explanation on Pinoy assault in Argentina

Senate asks the Department of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday to recall the Philippine envoy to Argentina following the assault of a Filipino boxer who won in a recent match there. "I move that we order the DFA to recall our ambassador to Buenos Aires and to call the ambassador of Argentina to this country to explain why they have to assault our flag, the honor, the dignity of this country represented by our boxer," irked Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said. The Senate during Wednesday’s legislative session decided to recall the Philippine Ambassador to Argentina, Rey Carandang, after Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III showed a video of Filipino boxer John Riel Casimero getting mobbed last Feb. 11 in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. After the tenth round, Casimero won via technical knockout the International Boxing Federation’s Junior Flyweight title against Argentinean Luis Lazarte. But even before he was declared the winner, the video showed that the crowd started throwing bottled waters, debris and chairs aimed at the Filipino boxer and his entourage. "Nasa baba na ng ring si Casimero dinudumog pa rin nila," Sotto said, noting that the Filipino boxer along with his trainer, boxing manager and promoter suffered serious injuries. To make matters worse, the President of Argentine Boxing Commission, Osvaldo Bisbal, said that “there is no one to punish for the ugly post fight riot” and “everything was fine” at the venue, Sotto noted. Sotto said that the Philippine Games and Amusements Board has already sent a letter to Bisbal, showing concern over the incident and asking for an investigation. “Will we settle for this kind of bullying to Filipinos? We must condemn in the strongest possible terms this attack on a Filipino sports hero and the entire Philippine delegation,” Sotto said. Enrile added, “We must protect our citizens against mistreatment committed by other nations otherwise they will trample our flag, honor, dignity as human beings in this planet.” Senator Lito Lapid, a known action movie star, jokingly asked how big Lazarte is because he might be able to take out the Argentinean boxer on his own. “Kung may kanta silang 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina,' paiyakin na natin sila ngayon,” Lapid said. John Pratts and Bianca Manalo: The Real Score

After the nonstop speculations regarding the real score between “Happy Yipee Yehey” former hosts John Prats and Bianca Manalo, John finally admitted that they are already officially together.

John and Bianca were always seen together in public events but the two remained tightlipped about their real status. However, in an interview in “The Buzz” on Sunday, February 12, John finally revealed that he and Bianca are already on.

“Siguro naman di ba? Kami na talaga. Hindi ko naman siya mamahalin ng sobra-sobra kung hindi ko alam na ganun din ang pinapakita niya sa akin,” John said.

How it started

He and Bianca developed their friendship in ABS-CBN’s defunct noontime show, where they were also always teased and paired by their co-hosts and staff.

“Kung ano nakita niyo sa kanya sa “Happy Yipee Yehey,” kung paano siya mag-host, kung paano sya magtitili, magsisigaw, kung paano siya magsalita at umarte, ganoon talaga siya,” John said.

True to herself

John admires Bianca most for being true to herself.

“Yung sobrang special sa kanya, sobra siyang totoo. ‘Yun yung importante na hindi na ako nasusurprise na may ganito pala siyang ugali or meron pala syang bad side. Kumbaga nilabas na niya agad,” he said.

John hopes for the best for Bianca.

“And ‘yun yung maganda kasi ilang beses na rin naman akong nadapa sa mga relationships and ngayon I’m hoping na sana ito na. Nakakapagod din naman na bago na naman, manliligaw ka na naman, pakilala mo na naman,” John said.

In a separate taped interview with Bianca on “The Buzz,” Bianca shared how happy she is to have John in her life. She also said that John, who she describes as kind and trustworthy, is important to her.

“Masaya ko. Sobra akong thankful kung ano man ang meron kami ngayon. Sana magtuloy-tuloy. Sobrang mahalaga siya sa kin na basta alam ko hanggang nandiyan siya, masaya ako,” Bianca said.

Aside from turning 28 on February 14, John is celebrating his 20 years in showbiz.

“Pinakamagandang aral, sa lahat nag naexperience ko, sa lahat ng gusto nyong ma-achieve, talagang hard work. Don’t stop dreaming,” John said.

Bb. Pilpinas World 2008 Danielle Castaño: After you, Ms. Gloria!

After starring in Mario O’ Hara’s Cinemalaya film “Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio” and TV5’s defunct teen show “Iskul Bukol,” Bb. Pilipinas-World 2008 Danielle Castaño now wants to try hosting.

“I’m trying to make a comeback in showbiz. I want to be known as an actress or a host,” Danielle said in a pocket interview at Viva Entertainment’s office on Thursday, February 9.

Danielle competed in the 2008 Miss World beauty pageant in South Africa in 2008 and bagged a spot in Top 32.

She is on the cover of FHM magazine’s February 2012 issue, together with fellow Viva artist Jade Lopez.

After signing a five-year contract with Viva last October 2011, Danielle is busy with events, hosting and promotions for the magazine. She is also eyeing a stint in a TV drama or a teleserye for her comeback.

“I wanna do my best. If I’ll be given a chance to do a TV project, I want to do a drama. Because when I did the film, director Mario O’ Hara was happy with my performance,” she said.

Who among the male actors does she want to work with?

“I want to work with Derek Ramsey. Not only him. I would like to explore rin, as well. Pag bibigyan ako ng ka-love team, syempre, why not grab it?” she replied.

Danielle admitted that getting a break and making it in showbiz is a tough act. Some of her Bb Pilipinas contemporaries, like Bianca Manalo and Venus Raj have entered showbiz, but Danielle doesn’t see them as competition.

“I don’t see it as a competition getting in showbiz right now. I see it as a challenge, of course, syempre because there are lots of newcomers, and also beauty queens (entering showbiz),” Danielle said.

She believes that she can also make a name in showbiz as long as she continuously works hard.

“I believe that if you want something to happen in your life, if you want to achieve your goal, makukuha mo rin as long as there’s hard work and perseverance for it,” Danielle said.

Among Filipino beauty queens, Danielle admires Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz the most. Gloria has also established herself as an actress.

“Not only does she show beauty in the physical aspect, she exudes intelligence as well. Until this decade, she is being remembered in our country as a former Miss Universe and as aside from being an actress,” Danielle explained.

The athletic beauty queen did not hesitate to pose for a sexy magazine since her mother allowed her to do so. She also doesn’t think her responsibility as a Bb. Pilipinas beauty queen would create a problem as other Bb. Pilipinas beauties have posed for the said magazine.

“My mother approved and I’m happy about it. The opportunity was there, so why not grab it? There are also bunch of beauty queens like Carlene (Aguilar), Maggie (Wilson), Bianca Manalo, they also posed for FHM before. So, I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” Danielle goes on.

She adds that she enjoyed posing with Jade on the cover.

“They said na they want two girls for February issue to double the love. I’m happy with the outcome,” Danielle reveals.

Lin-sanity spreads to China - Jeremy Lin

The rise to stardom of Jeremy Lin, the first US-born NBA player of ethnic-Chinese heritage, has taken China by storm as the New York Knicks player becomes the focus of adulatory interest online.

Lin, the 23-year-old point guard for the Knicks, has captured attention worldwide after coming off the bench last week and helping New York to five straight triumphs while stars Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire were absent.

He was already popular among Chinese basketball fans after he joined the Golden State Warriors last season in San Francisco. In 2010, he also participated in charity basketball games organised by China's famed Yao Ming.

But ever since he dropped 38 points on Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday morning Beijing time, the number of followers of his Chinese Twitter-like weibo microblog has shot up, reaching nearly 850,000.

"Lin Shuhao (Lin's Chinese name) thank you!" one fan said on Sina's weibo service.

"I have once again found a reason to be infatuated with the NBA after Yao Ming retired, and it's because of you."

Chinese press reports said Yao -- a huge star who retired from the NBA last year -- had sought to sign Lin to the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanghai Sharks during the NBA lockout last year but Lin opted against playing in China.

While difficult to match the huge interest generated by Yao over the years, Lin's sudden stardom means that basketball fans in China have another person to focus on beyond Yi Jianlian, currently the Asian nation's only NBA player.

On Sunday, China's state television CCTV even adjusted its NBA schedule, broadcasting New York's win over Minnesota and announcing it planned to show more Knicks games this week.

Lin has also become a fixture with leading sports newspapers like Titan Sports Weekly and the Basketball Pioneers, while search engine Baidu.com turned up 1.6 million Internet postings under Lin's Chinese name.

His Chinese Wikipedia-style Baike page, meanwhile, has generated 3.5 million hits.

Lin had a difficult start in the NBA. He was undrafted after playing at Harvard University but eventually reached a contract with Golden State in July 2010. They waived him in December last year.

The Houston Rockets then briefly claimed him but Yao's former team also ended up waiving him.

But he eventually found a place with the Knicks late last year, and became the first player since LeBron James to average 20 points and eight assists in his first two NBA starts.

Adele top winner with 6 Grammys

Adele, who captured the world's heart with an album about a broken romance, emerged as the top winner at Sunday's Grammy Awards, winning six trophies including the prestigious trifecta of record, song and album of the year.

The singer, who also made a triumphant comeback from vocal cord surgery on the Grammy stage, sobbed as she won the night's final award, album of the year, for "21." It was last year's top-selling album with more than six million copies sold and remains lodged at the No. 1 spot on this year's charts.

Her victories tied her with Beyonce as the most wins by a woman in one evening.

"Mom, gold is good!" Adele shouted as she took the album of the year trophy.

The celebration of Adele, a big-voiced, soulful singer, came on a night where the Grammys marked the loss of one of music's great female voices — and one of its most prized talents overall. Whitney Houston died the night before the Grammys, casting a shadow over music's biggest night.

There has been speculation that the singing superstar drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday. However, TMZ alleges that Whitney could have died “before her head became submerged”.

“We're told Coroner's officials informed the family there was not enough water in Whitney's lungs to lead to the conclusion that she drowned.”
